About Our Organization

The mission of Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA) is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of well-coached Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities by providing them with continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, prepare for entry into school and community programs, express courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics Athletes, and the community.

Special Olympics Massachusetts, with the on-going assistance of more than 10,000 volunteers, provides 122 organized competitions each year to 12,592 children and adults. Training is offered by more than 1,200 coaches in 27 different individual and team sports.

Why donate to Special Olympics Massachusetts? The love in a hug. The sweat of courage. The tears of joy and disappointment.

Special Olympics Massachusetts helps individuals with intellectual disabilities discover their true potential. We equip them with real world skills that benefit them on the playing fields of sport and life.

Special Olympics Massachusetts receives very little federal or state funding and is almost entirely dependent on individual and corporate donations to support its programs. No athlete ever pays a fee to participate in Special Olympics. Our goal is to reach out and increase the number of participants each year while maintaining the quality of our training programs and competitions already benefiting so many Massachusetts citizens with intellectual disabilities. Like any team, we can't do it alone.
